YL Extension to CELTA
The Cambridge ESOL Young Learners Extension Certificate is intended for CELTA qualified teachers who are
involved in teaching English to young learners or who would like some formal training in this area.

Organisation
Each course is approved by Cambridge ESOL and satisfies the specific regulations and requirements that ensure that courses:
- are delivered by Cambridge ESOL‐ approved staff with the relevant experience and training;
- provide tutorial guidance, support and feedback for all candidates, for both teaching practice and written work;
- include a minimum of 50 hours contact with course tutors including assessed teaching practice and directed observation of experienced teachers, as specified in the regulations for the specific scheme;
- are delivered in approved premises and with full access to the required resources;
- maintain and provide course records and provide candidate records;
- observe local laws regarding staff employment and copyright;
- provide candidates with full information regarding candidate enquiries on results and complaints procedure.
Syllabus
The course includes teaching practice with groups of children aged eight to thirteen, assisted lesson planning and feedback on teaching practice. The following topics are included in the seminars:
- differences between adult and younger learners;
- how children learn;
- teaching lexis;
- accuracy and fluency;
- lesson planning;
- creative games;
- topic‐based grammar lessons;
- teacher/student produced materials and adapting published materials;
- project work;
- teenagers and very young learners;
- discipline and classroom management;
- videos and songs.

Applicants
In order to obtain the YL Extension Qualification, applicants should have passed the CELTA, although it is not necessary to have experience of teaching younger learners.
All applicants should provide the names of three referees, including their most recent employer. At least two of these will be contacted by the centre, via letter, phone and specifically asked to comment on the applicant’s suitability to work with young learners, stating whether they know of any impediment to their being employed in this context.
Applicants are accepted on the completion of a successful interview. Telephone interviews can be organised for candidates living outside Italy.
