e.p_violaInternational House World Organisation Certificate in Teaching Business English (Level 1)

This course is intended for teachers who have little or no experience of teaching Business English. It is suitable for teachers who have recently completed the CELTA and for General English teachers who want to diversify into Business English.

The course was written by highly qualified business teachers and trainers who work for International House and were commissioned by International House World Organisation. On completion of the course and assignments, successful participants will receive a certificate from the International Hourse World Organisation.

The course contains 30 modules divided into 3 main areas: Basic Business Awareness, Professional Skills and Methodology and Materials.

e.p_violaInternational House World Organisation Certificate in Teaching 1-2-1

The International House Certificate in 1-2-1 Methodology is designed to give participants a solid grasp of the main issues and solid basis in the techniques involved in teaching 1-2-1. It is aimed at teachers with a CELTA or IHCTL who are preferably current practising teachers who have 1-2-1 students.

As the course increases in complexity fairly rapidly, it is not recommended in its entirety as a full-time course for teachers with little or no 1-2-1 experience (see modes of delivery options below). Newly qualified teachers might find the BET 1 course (Business English Teaching, level 1) a good lead-in before moving on to the 1-2-1 Course.

The course consists of 30 hours of input over 10 modules and (at least) 20 hours of homework / portfolio tasks (reading, observation or action research), plus a post-course assignment.

A) Content

- Ten modules, each with a principal focus, three individual sessions, a TP assignment, a Chat Group topic and recommended reading.

- 30 hours “contact” or session time

- 6 hours (at least) reading and research.

B) Teaching Practice

- 6-10 hours of TP (Teaching Practice) (either unobserved, peer observed or self-observed). If candidates take the course intensively without access to their own students for practice TP lthis will have to take place as soon as possible after the course. The TP will need DoS / local tutor supervision, before the final assessment phase.

C) Assessment

- A Portfolio compiled during the course.

- A final assignment which includes 1 hour of observed and assessed TP, a written Needs Analysis and Student Profile, and a Course Plan with commentary.

TKT  - Teaching Knowledge Test

TKT is a test that focuses on the teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners of English, anywhere in the world. Preparing for TKT will help you grow in confidence as a teacher and give you the knowledge and skills that will help you develop your career and enhance your job prospects.

Overview

TKT is divided into separate modules. You can take them all, or just choose the ones that meet your needs. You have total flexibility in how and when you take the modules and receive a certificate for each one completed. The modules are divided into two main areas:

Core modules

  • Module 1 – Background to language teaching
  • Module 2 – Planning for language teaching
  • Module 3 – Classroom management
  • Practical – Assessment of teaching competence

Specialist modules

  • TKT: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) – A test of the understanding of this exciting approach to teaching curriculum subjects through the medium of a second or third language.
  • TKT: Knowledge About Language (KAL) – A test of knowledge and understanding of the systems of language from a teaching perspective.
  • TKT: Young Learners – A test of the background knowledge related to teaching young learners in the 6–12 age range.
